A DUVET FOR A BABY, YES OR NO?

I grew up underneath a duvet, as did my brothers and sisters. Pretty much our entire family did to be honest. As a new father for me this is arguably one of the more precious moments, see my kids get comfortable underneath their duvet, or seeing them stretch after an incredible night’s sleep.

Is it safe? Absolutely!

There are a few things to keep in mind, and this goes for all types of bedding for children. Whether that’s down duvets, sheets, fleece blankets or synthetic materials.

BABIES CAN'T REGULATE THEIR TEMPERATURE

The most important thing to keep in mind is that a baby’s thermoregulation is not at its peak yet, meaning a baby’s body cannot self regulate whether it’s warm or cold. It can still be disrupted throughout the growth process. In comparison to adults, small children, being under the age of 3 years old, react very differently to heat.

Kids have a different mechanism to keep their body temperature stable. Because children have a relatively large skin surface, their bodies will release more heat that way. If that heat cannot escape because the body is too covered up, the child can overheat, which comes with unnecessary consequences.

USE NATURAL MATERIALS

That’s why it’s important to use light and breathable fabrics that don’t hinder, but rather aid a child’s journey to stable thermoregulation. Natural materials are perfect as they aid in moisture regulation. Using less insulating bedding is also an important tool. At Fja-Oeyen we have created a great baby duvet that covers all these bases by adding less filling to our baby duvets. It’s less insulating, yet still warm and cozy enough.

EVERY CHILD IS UNIQUE

At the end of the day, the parent’s know best and it’s up to them to check whether their little ones are too hot, cold or just right. Passing down bedding between siblings can be tricky too because the older brother may have loved his little duvet, while it’s too hot for his little sister.

Keep an eye on you littlest ones, and see what they like best!
