NATURAL SLEEP AIDS

Sleep medication seems to be a simple, quick solution to sleeping problems. However, there are many drawbacks to it. So look for natural alternatives!

Disadvantages of sleeping medication

Let it be clear: no sleep aid is a solution for chronic sleep problems. In that case, of course, the cause and a suitable treatment must be sought.

In emergency situations, (pharmaceutical) sleep medication can provide some relief. However, you should be aware of the addictive effect, withdrawal symptoms and a host of side effects (dizziness, drowsiness, coordination disorders, etc.). Herbal remedies for sleeping can do much less harm and you can just find out for yourself what works or not for you.

7 HERBAL SLEEP AIDS

  • Valerian root

Already in ancient times valerian was a popular sleep aid. Actually, this herb (in capsules or tea) mainly has a calming effect, making it easier to fall asleep. However, it does not work for everyone. If you still don't feel any difference after 2 weeks, it is best to consult a doctor.

  • Chamomile

The famous chamomile tea can rock you to sleep. Chamomile has a soothing, anti-inflammatory and calming effect on the stomach.

  • Lavender

The fragrance is immediately reminiscent of the Provence ... and therefore also has a calming effect. Put some lavender tincture in your bath, on your pillow or in a scent diffuser. Or even better: let yourself be massaged with lavender oil!

  • Lime-tree blossom

Lime-tree blossom tea calms you down and promotes sleep. Ideal if you find it difficult to fall asleep with the flu or a cold, because it has a fever-preventing effect.

  • Hop

No, a pint of beer before you go to bed won't help. But if you drink tea from a bit of dried hop cones, you'll sleep better. Hop balances your hormones and improves your digestion. Note: hops taste very bitter, so a few grams per cup is enough.

  • Lemon balm

This is an herb that grows very easily in your own garden, with a sweet lemon flavor. You make a nice tea from it, which especially helps when you sleep restlessly. The substances in lemon balm counteract mood swings.

  • Passion flower

The passion flower has a sedative and calming effect. Especially if you find it difficult to fall asleep due to stress or anxiety, this is a good option. Passion flower is also a good option for children.
